Murthy Gives CCBC $50,000 Grant for Global Education Lectures

Murthy Law Firm founder and president, Sheela Murthy, is not just an advocate for international education; she has a deep philanthropic commitment to the cause as well. Just in time for the start of the new school year, Murthy has generously provided a $50,000 endowment to establish the Sheela Murthy / Donna Riehl Global Lecture Series at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), a program that will bring to campus a who’s who of global leaders in business, government, and education. Murthy shares the name of the series with Donna Riehl, her dear friend and a former dean of CCBC who succumbed to cancer in 2011. Murthy and Riehl met while serving on the Board of the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland (GSCM), and found they shared a passion for public service.

Always a top student when she was at Harvard Law School and in her native India, Murthy knows the value of a global education, and she’s committed to sharing that experience with a new generation of students at CCBC. Since 2012, she has served as honorary chair of CCBC’s Global Education Committee, helping to raise matching funds for the college’s National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant, to support the creation of a new Center for Global Education on CCBC’s Catonsville campus. Murthy was the featured speaker at last year’s International Week Global Lecture Series, and helped to kick off CCBC’s global education fund drive.

When complete, CCBC’s Center for Global Education will provide a focal point for global education on campus: a place to share insights with visitors from around the world, where students can develop the cross-cultural skills they need to succeed in the international marketplace. Why do this at CCBC? Because it’s not only the largest community college in Maryland, with more than 70,000 students, it’s also the largest provider of higher education and workforce training in the Baltimore metro area. In other words, Murthy’s generosity isn’t just smart philanthropy, it makes sound business sense as well: it’s good for CCBC and its students, and good for Maryland’s economy!
