MLF Supports Efforts to Fight Human Trafficking

Murthy Law Firm founder and president, Sheela Murthy, was among the many distinguished guests who attended the December 11th International Justice Mission’s (IJM) massive annual benefit gala at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C. Murthy was accompanied by a delegation of MLF attorneys, staffers, and friends who joined her at two tables sponsored by the Murthy Law Firm and the MurthyNAYAK Foundation, all to raise funds for a very important cause: fighting the global epidemic of human trafficking.

Human trafficking is a modern term for one of the world’s most ancient and despicable crimes: the transport, sale, and enslavement of human beings. According to the United Nations, an estimated 20.9 million people around the world are victims of forced labor, and a substantial proportion of them are believed to be victims of human trafficking. The majority of trafficking victims are women and girls, many of whom are forced into the international sex trade: 62 percent of detected victims in Europe and Central Asia from 2007-2010; 51 percent in the Americas; 44 percent in South Asia, East Asia, and the Pacific; and 36 percent in Africa and the Middle East. As a humanitarian and philanthropist with a long-term commitment to human rights – and particularly women’s empowerment – Sheela Murthy is honored to support this important work, and she was proud to have MLF so well represented at the event. Sheela invites you to join her in supporting IJM. Further information on the work of International Justice Mission is on the web.
