Murthy Law Firm Joins FIRN’s Celebration of Immigrant Success Stories

Murthy Law Firm founder and president, Sheela Murthy, was among the many philanthropists and immigrant rights advocates who turned out for FIRN’s 10th Annual American Success Awards on June 5th. Murthy was joined by MLF team members Aron Finkelstein, Dana Delott, and Harriet Bessel. The MurthyNAYAK Foundation was a proud sponsor of this event.

FIRN is a Columbia, Maryland-based nonprofit that provides English language and tutoring programs, as well as immigration counseling, information and referrrals to foreign-born clients from around the world. Three distinguished immigrants received FIRN’s American Success Award, in recognition of their contributions to Howard County’s dynamic economy and diverse community:

  • Chuen-Chin Bianca Chang, a pediatric nurse and Johns Hopkins graduate who spearheaded the Chinese Language School of Columbia and other programs that teach Chinese language and culture
  • John Corso, a Canadian immigrant and Harvard MBA who runs Coastal Sunbelt Produce, which employs over 900 people from 20 countries. The company offers lessons in English language and American culture to his foreign-born employees
  • Dr. Toyin Opesanmi, a Nigerian immigrant who founded Genessaret Medical Center in Baltimore, a primary care clinic that helps a diverse patient population, including those who lack health insurance

The Pat Hatch Award – named for the tireless immigrant advocate and social entrepreneur who founded FIRN, 30 years ago – was presented to Victor Broccolino and Howard County General Hospital, in recognition of their efforts to serve an ethnically diverse patient population in Howard County.

It is great to see so many people following in the footsteps of Pat Hatch, welcoming immigrants to this great country of ours and helping them to succeed in their American dream!
