Attorneys from The Law Office of Sheela Murthy, P.C. recently went to
Annapolis, Maryland’s capital, to testify on certain bills pending before
the Maryland State Legislature. It is our commitment to further the cause
of immigrants and immigration in the U.S. by educating our legislators on
the complex and myriad issues surrounding immigration law and immigrants in
this country.

Attorney Sheela Murthy testified before the State of Maryland, House
Judiciary Committee in Annapolis, Maryland on March 17, 2005. Attorney
Murthy's testimony was in opposition to two pending Maryland State bills
that would have negatively impacted immigrants. The first bill would have
permitted the law enforcement of one particular Maryland county to detain any
non-citizens they believed did not have a proper immigration status. The
other bill would have prevented persons without legal status from driving a
vehicle in Maryland. Both bills have failed to pass out of committee.
Attorney Murthy testified on these bills with other immigration attorneys in
the state. Another attorney from The Law Office of Sheela Murthy, Carla O’Donoghue, testified on other immigration issues pending in Maryland.
These issues included anti-notario legislation, the creation of a state law
against human trafficking, and
in opposition to the
establishment of
a task force to study the effect of non-citizens without
immigration status on the Maryland job market.

The Law Office of Sheela Murthy is pleased to have participated in lobbying
efforts at the state level. Though immigration law is federal in nature,
there are bills at the state level that can affect the lives of immigrants
on a daily basis. Superficially, it may appear that some bills make
sense but, upon further study and investigation, the complexity surrounding most of these bills
often requires a deeper sensitivity and
understanding of the issues. We are pleased to be able to
positively impact immigration in the United States. Anyone interested should also get
involved in his or her own state’s legislation on issues dealing with
immigration.
