Other Government Efforts for Katrina Victims Posted Sep 16, 2005  ©MurthyDotCom The U.S. Department of State (DOS) sent a cable to the consulates, reminding them to extend humanitarian consideration to visa applicants who are trying to come to the United States because they are family members of victims of Hurricane Katrina. These applications will be processed as quickly as possible.  ©MurthyDotCom For persons who need to find missing family members, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has compiled a list of the sources to locate people. Generally, these lists are not limited to U.S. citizens and may be a resource to determine whether a victim of Katrina has safely evacuated.  ©MurthyDotCom J-1 exchange visitors whose exchange programs have been disrupted by the hurricane are directed to contact their program sponsors.  ©MurthyDotCom The DOS has also established a telephone number for persons from the affected regions who have applied for U.S. passports but have been delayed in receiving these passports due to Hurricane Katrina and need to travel in the next 14 days.
