The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a Notice in the
Federal Register on November 9, 2004 identifying the 50 busiest land ports
of entry (POE). The notice indicates when these ports of entry (POE) will
begin using US-VISIT for foreign nationals entering the United States. A
later notice announcing US-VISIT exit processes at these ports is expected.
These land ports are significant to persons traveling between the U.S. and
the immediately-neighboring countries of Canada and Mexico. The program is
being phased-in between, approximately, November 15 and December 27, 2004.
All of the ports will begin using US-VISIT by December 31, 2004. The DHS
WebSite provides additional information on the
US-VISIT Program. If there are any changes in the phase-in dates of the
ports, these will be reflected on the DHS WebSite.

As many MurthyDotCom and MurthyBulletin readers travel for
business and pleasure to Canada and Mexico, we consider it advantageous for
them to be forewarned of US-Visit procedures at the land ports.

Travelers though these ports should be mindful of the need to cooperate with
the US-VISIT procedures. Reports about US-VISIT are that it is a quick and
efficient procedure that does not substantially delay travel. With the
holiday rush between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day (Nov 25, 2004 - Jan 1,
2005), and the implementation of US-VISIT at the same time, however, the
processing times to enter the United States may increase substantially. So,
it best to plan accordingly.
