The U.S. Consulate in Hyderabad, India, was scheduled to open on Monday, December 15, 2008. Since that is less than a week away, there have been many questions about the availability of visa services through the new consulate; particularly of visa appointments. We received confirmation from the U.S. Department of State (DOS) that the opening date will be December 17, 2008. As of this writing, the website for the U.S. Consulate in Hyderabad is directing visa applicants to continue to utilize the existing services of the U.S. Consulate in Chennai, India. It may be possible that the new Consulate is not yet ready to begin issuing visa appointments as soon as they open.

The December 17th opening date is consistent with information provided to Attorney Sheela Murthy and to Attorney Senthil Kumar, who is based at Murthy Immigration Services, Pvt. Ltd. (MISPL) in Chennai. Ms. Murthy and Mr. Kumar met a few months ago with Mr. Mark Fry, the then Chief of Consular Services, at the U.S. Consulate, Chennai. At that time, we were told that the U.S. Consulate in Hyderabad, India was gearing up for operations. Ambassador David C. Mulford signed a lease on July 3, 2008, with the intention of starting operations by the end of 2008. The new Consulate will be the fourth consulate in India after Chennai, Kolkata, and Mumbai, besides the U.S. Embassy in the Indian capital of New Delhi. The Consulate in Hyderabad is expected to make it easier for people from Andhra Pradesh to apply for visas and obtain other services from the U.S. government.

In an effort to obtain a firm opening date, we contacted the Hyderabad Consulate through MISPL in Chennai, the home of the only other U.S. consulate in South India, and checked with other official sources. This resulted in the advisement that the opening date will be December 17, 2008.
