Immigration Advocates Launch Fix 96" Campaign to Restore Fairness to Immigration Laws We have reported in previous issues of the Law Office of Sheela Murthy Bulletin about the devastating changes wrought by the 1996 immigration laws on individuals and families. These laws, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRAIRA) and the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA), sharply increase the number and categories of people who may be subject to deportation, while at the same time eliminating many ways to obtain discretionary relief to avoid being deported.

AILA has now joined with a broad coalition of groups including ethnic groups, civil rights organizations, business groups, labor unions, law enforcement, and religious organizations, to inaugurate a legal reform campaign called "Fix '96: Restoring America's Tradition as a Nation of Immigrants and a Nation of Laws." Planned activities include lobbying Congress for changes to the immigration laws, and using a variety of media to publicize how immigrants, and their American families and employers, are harmed by some of these laws. The Law Office of Sheela Murthy will post updates on the campaign as they become available, including information on how you can become involved!
