New Citizens : Get Involved in the Political Process and VOTE
Posted Aug 25, 2000 If you have just become a citizen of this great country, congratulations! As you know, your new citizenship status brings with it the right to vote. What makes this country so special and helps ensure that our lifestyles and choices are respected and protected is our ability to have the government work for us. We, the citizens of the United States, have the powerful ability to hire and fire people that work in the government. We can replace government officials with people we believe are stronger, smarter, and better able to lead our country on the road of prosperity. We can select those who will best protect our rights as individuals. This ability to hire and fire our government officials is bestowed upon us if we choose to exercise our right to vote. Unfortunately, many United States citizens do not vote, thereby taking democracy for granted. They give up this fundamental right and ability to make a difference. With many eligible voters not participating in the election process, your vote, as a new citizen, makes a difference. As an aside, even if everyone voted, every vote would still count because many elections are close ones. We ask that after you have become a citizen you register to vote, and then actually take the time to vote. You **can** make a difference. In order to vote, you must first register to vote. We provide below, as a public service, a listing of the voter registration information numbers for each state. This information was collected by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), for their new pamphlet on voter registration. | ALABAMA : | 334-242-4337 or 800-274-VOTE | | ALASKA : | 907-465-4611 | | ARIZONA : | 602-364-4700 or 877-843-8683 | | ARKANSAS : | 501-682-5070 | | CALIFORNIA : | 916-657-2166 | | COLORADO : | 303-894-2680 | | CONNECTICUT : | 860-509-6100 or 800-540-3764 | | DELAWARE : | 302-739-4277 | | WASHINGTON, DC : | 202-727-2525 | | FLORIDA : | 850-488-7690 | | GEORGIA : | 404-656-2871 | | HAWAII : | 808-586-0255 | | IDAHO : | 208-334-2300 | | ILLINOIS : | 217-782-4141 | | INDIANA : | 317-232-3939 | | IOWA : | 888-767-8683 | | KANSAS : | 785-296-4564 | | KENTUCKY : | 502-573-7100 | | LOUISIANA : | 225-925-7885 | | MAINE : | 800-222-VOTE | | MARYLAND : | 800-222-VOTE | | MASSACHUSETTS : | 617-727-2828 or 800-462-VOTE | | MICHIGAN : | 517-373-2540 | | MINNESOTA : | 651-296-2803 | | MISSISSIPPI : | 601-359-1350 | | MISSOURI : | 314-751-2301 | | MONTANA : | 406-444-4732 | | NEBRASKA : | 402-471-2554 | | NEVADA : | 702-687-3176 | | NEW HAMPSHIRE : | 603-271-3242 | | NEW JERSEY : | 609-292-3760 | | NEW MEXICO : | 505-827-3622 or 800-477-3632 | | NEW YORK : | 518-474-8100 | | NORTH CAROLINA : | 919-715-1792 | | NORTH DAKOTA : | 701-328-4146 | | OHIO : | 614-644-0649 | | OKLAHOMA : | 405-521-2391 | | OREGON : | 503-986-1518 | | PENNSYLVANIA : | 717-787-2805 | | RHODE ISLAND : | 401-277-2340 | | SOUTH CAROLINA : | 803-734-9060 or 800-734-9060 | | SOUTH DAKOTA : | 605-773-3537 | | TENNESSEE : | 615-741-7956 | | TEXAS : | 512-463-5650 | | UTAH : | 801-538-1040 | | VERMONT : | 802-828-2304 | | VIRGINIA : | 804-786-6551 | | WASHINGTON : | 360-753-2336 | | WEST VIRGINIA : | 304-558-6000 | | WISCONSIN : | 608-266-8005 | | WYOMING : | 307-777-5333 | © The Law Office of Sheela Murthy, P.C.
