The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has launched an eNewsletter. The July 2005 inaugural issue of the newsletter includes a message from the current USCIS Director, Eduardo Aguirre. Director Aguirre urges readers of the publication to support USCIS Acting Director Michael Petrucelli. Director Aguirre will be departing the USCIS to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra. Mr. Petrucelli currently serves as Deputy Director and Chief of Staff at the USCIS.

Backlog Reduction

The USCIS reports in the newsletter that the current total backlog of USCIS cases was 1,047,096, as of May 2005. This is a significant decrease when compared to 2003 and 2004. The USCIS intends to continue its backlog reduction efforts. We note that the reported backlog reduction, while commendable, is not quite as ambitious as reported. The USCIS reports that the backlog went from 3,419,039 in May 2004 to 1,047,096 in May 2005. However, as reported in our April 1, 2005 MurthyBulletin article, Update from USCIS on Backlog Reduction Plan, a portion of the reduction in the backlog is due to the fact that I-130s without current priority dates are no longer included in the backlog totals. So, although these cases still exist, they are no longer counted. The USCIS notes that their completed cases outnumbered the cases they received in the first quarter of fiscal year 2005 by 154,891. They expect higher completion levels as part of future backlog elimination efforts.

The USCIS is asking for stories from naturalized citizens describing their experiences in coming to the United States and becoming citizens. Anyone who has a story to share may submit it on the USCIS WebSite.
