Update on FOIA
Processing at NRC
Posted
Jan 13, 2006
The National Records Center (NRC) for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services (USCIS) has recently indicated to the Murthy Law Firm that they are
processing 4000 to 6000 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests per
month. Essentially, FOIA requests are made by individuals in need of copies
of documents from their immigration files before proceeding with a new
application or petition.
The NRC now handles FOIA requests that are sent to the USCIS Service Centers
and to the USCIS District Offices. They are experiencing some backlogs due
to this additional caseload. For more information regarding when FOIA
requests may be helpful in immigration requests, please see our August 5,
2005 article, FOIA
Requests Filed with DHS in FY2004, available on MurthyDotCom.
