PERM is Not an Amnesty Program

Any time there is a change in immigration law, it is accompanied by information and misinformation. Most of our MurthyDotCom and MurthyBulletin readers work hard to keep themselves abreast of immigration matters. There are many, however, who are less informed and they are more likely to fall victim to various scams. We have learned of such scams in connection with PERM. Unscrupulous individuals have been promoting PERM as some form of amnesty or legalization to unsuspecting families and individuals. However, PERM is nothing of the sort.

As regular MurthyDotCom and MurthyBulletin readers know, PERM is a new method of filing the labor certification portion of a green card case. It does not otherwise change the immigration laws and procedures. It does not provide any special benefits that were not previously provided by a labor certification. It is most certainly NOT an amnesty or legalization program for individuals present in the United States without status.

We at The Law Office of Sheela Murthy ask any of our readers, who come across misinformation of this type about PERM, hearing friends or colleagues who are misinformed on this matter, to direct them to reliable sources. Information about the amnesty scams came from Texas. As a border state, Texas is obviously a place with many individuals who could be targeted by such scams. Misinformation and abuse of this kind knows no boundaries and could occur anywhere, however. It is best to be mindful of the old adage: "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
