USCIS Delay in Issuing Receipt Notices in April / May 2006

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is reporting that, due to a large volume of case filings in April 2006, there is a delay in mailing out most types of receipt notices. The USCIS assures those who have sought premium processing that the 15-day review period will be honored and hopes to have receipt notices back to regular processing times by mid-May 2006.

A receipt notice generally has two dates: a received date and a notice date. The received date should reflect the day that the USCIS actually received the filing. The notice date is the day the receipt notice is issued. The receipt date is the relevant date for proving that a case was timely filed, while a person still maintains valid nonimmigrant status. This earlier date is often vital to demonstrate that a timely filing has been made, as required for compliance with immigration laws.
