Somalia TPS Extended
Posted
Sep 13, 2002
On September 6, 2002 the MurthyBulletin and MurthyDotCom
published, TPS Extended for
Sudan and Burundi, an article on the extension of Temporary
Protected Status (TPS) designations for those countries. INS has announced
that, effective September 17, 2002, it is also extending the program for
nationals of Somalia or persons without nationality who last resided in
Somalia.
For persons seeking to reregister, eligibility is limited to those who
previously registered and complied with each subsequent registration.
However, those who have not registered may be eligible under late initial
registration provisions. There are a number of restrictions on the late
applicants.
It is important to check the INS Notice for specific registration
instructions under the Somali program. This Notice should be reviewed
carefully in order to determine whether one is eligible for TPS. For those
who currently have TPS under this program, re-registration is necessary to
extend TPS status and authorization to live and work in the U.S. beyond
September 17, 2002. It is important to check the
Notice that INS published in the Federal Register, available on the
INS WebSite. There is a list of dates of publication by INS in the
Federal Register. Next to each date is a link to that particular Notice.
Click the link for the July 26, 2002 Notice. It may take a few minutes to
load.
Other countries that are currently designated under TPS programs are Angola,
El Salvador, Honduras, Montserrat, Nicaragua, Sierra Leone, and Somalia.
Those individuals under the TPS program must be careful to meet all
applicable registration deadlines. More information regarding specific
TPS programs is available on the INS WebSite.
