Consulates Respond to Possible Y2K
Glitches in Other Countries
Posted
Nov 20, 1999
As a safeguard against possible malfunctions due to the so-called Y2K
bug, all U.S. consulates will be suspending non-immigrant visa services for
the first two business days of the calendar year 2000, and immigrant visa
processing for the first two weeks of the year. During those periods, the
consulates will be focusing on providing services to U.S. citizens. The
State Department also suggests that prospective adoptive parents not travel
overseas early next year.
In a previous edition of the Law Office of Sheela Murthy, P.C. Bulletin, we
reported that the U.S. Department of State, as well as the other agencies
handling immigration matters, had declared themselves to be Y 2 K compliant.
However, since the level of readiness varies in countries around the world,
the consulates operating abroad do have to plan for problems with the local
technological infrastructure.
